It can be applied to the skin, inhaled, or used in the nose. It is used to alleviate inflammation and itchiness in skin conditions that respond to treatment with glucocorticoids such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Mometasone furoate, not mometasone, is used in medical products.

It has a role as an anti-inflammatory drug, a dermatologic drug, a vasoconstrictor agent and an anti-allergic agent. It is functionally related to a Delta(1)-progesterone.
