What is JURUBINE?
Description
This glucoalkaloid has been obtained from the roots of Solanum paniculatum L. It is isolated as an amorphous powder with no definite melting point and has [α]D - 27.8° (pyridine). The base contains five hydroxyl groups and gives a pentaacetate which is crystalline, m.p. 165-8°C; [α]D - 41.1° (pyridine). Other crystalline derivatives that have been prepared are the N-( 4-bromobenzylidene) compound with m.p. 195-200°C and the N-salicylidene derivative, m.p. 176-7°C. The alkaloid undergoes acid or enzymic hydrolysis to yield D-glucose and jurubidine which has been shown to be (22R, 25S)-3/3-amino-5a-spirostane.
