What is endothion?
Description
Endothion is a white crystalline solid with aslight odor. Molecular weight= 280.25; Freezing/Meltingpoint = 96C. Hazard Identification (based on NFPA-704 MRating System): Health 4, Flammability 1, Reactivity 0.Soluble in water
Chemical properties
Crystals.Very soluble in water; soluble in chloroform and ethanol.
Chemical properties
Endothion is a white crystalline solid with a slight odor.
The Uses of endothion
Endothion is an insecticide. A hazardous material.
Definition
ChEBI: Endothion is a member of 4-pyranones.
General Description
White crystals with a slight odor. Used as an insecticide. Not sold in the USA or Canada.
Reactivity Profile
Organothiophosphates, such as endothion, are susceptible to formation of highly toxic and flammable phosphine gas in the presence of strong reducing agents such as hydrides. Partial oxidation by oxidizing agents may result in the release of toxic phosphorus oxides.
Hazard
Toxic by ingestion, cholinesterase inhibitor; use may be restricted.
Health Hazard
endothion is poisonous to humans. Its toxic effects are most likely related to action on the nervous system.
Fire Hazard
(Non-Specific -- Organophosphorus Pesticide, n.o.s.) Cylinder may explode in heat or fire. Fire and runoff from fire control water may produce irritating or poisonous gases. When heated to decomposition, endothion emits very toxic fumes of phosphorous oxides and sulfur oxides.
Potential Exposure
This material is a systemic insecticide. It is not sold in the United States or Canada
First aid
If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least15 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts theskin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediatelywith soap and water. Speed in removing material from skinis of extreme importance. Shampoo hair promptly if contaminated. Speed in removing material from skin is ofextreme importance. Seek medical attention immediately. Ifthis chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR ifheart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medicalfacility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and inducevomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit. Keepvictim quiet and maintain normal body temperature. Effectsmay be delayed; keep victim under observation.
Storage
Color Code—Blue: Health Hazard/Poison: Storein a secure poison location. Prior to working with thischemical you should be trained on its proper handling andstorage. Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, wellventilated area away from strong oxidizers
Shipping
UN2783 Organophosphorus pesticides, solid, toxic, Hazard Class: 6.1; Labels: 6.1-Poisonous materials. UN3018 Organophosphorus pesticides, liquid, toxic, Hazard Class: 6.1; Labels: 6.1-Poisonous materials
Incompatibilities
Contact with oxidizers may cause the release of phosphorous oxides. Contact with strong reducing agents, such as hydrides; may cause the formation of flammable and toxic phosphine gas.
Waste Disposal
In accordance with 40CFR 165 recommendations for the disposal of pesticides and pesticide containers. Must be disposed properly by following package label directions or by contacting your local or federal environmental control agency, or by contacting your regional EPA office.
