Dihydrocodeine is a synthetic opioid developed in the early 1900s. Its structure and pharmacokinetics are similar to codeine, and it is used for the treatment of postoperative and chronic pain. Both immediate- and sustainedrelease preparations are available. Despite its common use, there are very few clinical trials demonstrating efficacy. It has significant abuse potential.
