Mannitol, also known as mannitol, is a six-carbon polyol extracted from brown algae cells, with two configurations of D and L. The L configuration is a synthetic product and does not exist in nature. The D configuration is widely distributed in the plant kingdom. In particular, the marine brown algae of the kelp family have a high content, mannitol is a storage substance in brown algae cells, and large brown algae such as kelp are the main raw materials for the extraction of mannitol. The mannitol extracted from kelp and the nicotinic acid mannitol lipid synthesized with niacin have obvious effect on relieving angina pectoris and have a good curative effect on hyperlipidemia. It can treat conditions such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis. Mannitol is also a dehydrating agent and can be used medically. When its 20% solution is injected into the vein, because it is rarely decomposed in the body, it causes a temporary increase in blood osmotic pressure, so that the water in the tissue can enter the blood, thereby reducing the edema of the tissue. When mannitol is filtered from the glomerulus, it is not easy to be reabsorbed in the renal tubule, which increases the osmotic pressure of the original urine in the renal tubule, and brings out a large amount of water to play a diuretic effect.
