Dexcitalopram, the active isomer of citalopram (S-citalopram), has a highly selective inhibitory effect on the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) and the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine. Absorption effects are minimal. It increases the concentration of 5-HT in the synaptic cleft by preventing 5-HT reuptake, resulting in an antidepressant effect.
