Colorless monoclinic flaky crystal. Melting point 53-57 ℃. Soluble in water, ethanol and ether. 1ml water can dissolve chloral hydrate: 2.4g at 0℃; 8.3g at 25℃; 14.3g at 40℃. 1 g of chloral hydrate is soluble in: 1.3 ml of ethanol, 2 ml of chloroform, 1.5 ml of ether.
Hypnotics. Intermediate of DDT.
Used as pesticides, pharmaceutical intermediates, also used in the preparation of chloroform, trichloroacetaldehyde, etc.
