Benzoic acid

Benzoic acid, also known as benzoic acid, C6H5COOH, is a compound formed by the substitution of a hydrogen on the benzene ring by a carboxyl group (-cooh).A scaly or needle-like crystal with an odor of benzene or formaldehyde at room temperature.Its vapour has very strong irritant, easy to cause cough after inhalation.Slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether and other organic solvents.

Benzoic acid is a weak acid, stronger than fatty acids.Their chemical properties are similar, can form salt, ester, acyl halogen, amide, anhydride and so on, are not easy to be oxidized.The electrophilic substitution reaction can occur on the benzene ring of benzoic acid, and the intersite substitution products are mainly obtained.

Benzoic acid is widely found in nature in the form of free acids, esters or derivatives.Benzoic acid is commonly used as medicine or antiseptic, have the effect of inhibiting the growth of fungus, bacterium, mould, when medicinally, normally besmear is on the skin, in order to treat the skin disease of tinea kind.Used in synthetic fiber, resin, coating, rubber, tobacco industry.Benzoic acid was originally prepared by the dry distillation of benzoin gum or by the hydrolysis of alkaline water, or by the hydrolysis of hippuric acid.Industrial benzoic acid is produced by air oxidation of toluene in the presence of catalysts such as cobalt and manganese.Or by the release of phthalic anhydride water carboxylic system.Benzoic acid and its sodium salt can be used as a bacteriostatic agent for latex, toothpaste, jam or other foods, as well as as a mordant for dyeing and printing.
