The physical and chemical properties

Bismuth oxide, also known as bismuth trioxide, is a yellow powder, insoluble in water, soluble in strong acids to form bismuth (III) salts.Melting point 824°C, boiling point 1890 °C.It is one of the most important compounds of bismuth and can be reduced to metallic bismuth by hydrogen.Although bismuth trioxide can be obtained from a natural bismuth bloom (a mineral), its main source is usually a by-product of copper or lead smelting. Bismuth trioxide is obtained by burning bismuth powder in air.

Phase type

There are 4 main crystal phases and 2 non-stoichiometric phases of Bi2O3. The 4 main crystal phases are monoclinic phase (-bi2o3), square phase (-bi2o3), volume cubic phase (-bi2o3), and surface cubic phase (-bi2o3). The non-stoichiometric phases are bi2o2.33 and bi2o2.75.Delta and delta phases are stable phases at low temperature and high temperature respectively, while other phases are metastable phases at high temperature.
